I was surprised to learn that according to a study done in 2009, nearly a third of American adults take a nap during the day. Apparently us Narcoleptics aren’t the only ones who are taking naps.
And to think that all of these years, I thought I was so strange for taking daytime naps :-).
The study also found that the results differed based on age, income, and race.

If only my son could find comfort in this. He is still so horrified for anyone to know he has to nap. Will this go away???
I also was afraid of having people know that I have to nap, up until part way through high school when I discovered that people were very supportive and didn't care much. However, I still wouldn't tell people about it unless they needed to know. Today I am even better about it; I'm at the point where I'm comfortable telling people about it if it comes up and I think they should know about it.
Unfortunately, some kids aren't very nice, so I expect that for someone your son's age that it is not an unfounded fear to worry what other kids might think. adults don't have an issue with napping, often times they will say to me, oh, i wish i could nap with you! lol. however, kids think napping is "for babies."
I also kept my napping a big secret when I was your son's age: I would only tell people if they would see me napping or I had to tell them - so only my best friends knew. I never had many problems, however there was one kid in special needs classes who would bother me about what I was doing in the nurse's office (he happened to be there so he would see).
If I had to do it over, if someone knew I took a nap in the nurse's office every day and asked about it, I wouldn't say "it's none of your business" like i would say back then : that only makes kids want to know even more. I would just say I have a sleep problem where my doctor told me I have to take a nap, or something like that.
The benefit of just taking a nap on the beds in the nurses office is that unless a kid goes into the office every day, your son could always just say that he wasn't feeling well if someone who wasn't close to him asked about seeing him there. There happened to be a curtain I could close around the bed I was in at the school I was at, so no one would see me anyways if they did come into the nurses's office. And just so you don't worry, I didn't get sick anymore often from sleeping there... Good luck!
